California Brickellbush Brickellia californica Aster family (Asteraceae)
Look for this leafy shrub in rocky or shale covered slopes in the canyons. It grows to a nice size but the flowers are inconspicuous unless you give them more than a glancing attention.
Common shrub to 40" tall, with tacky or sticky leaves and stems. Wide, arrow or heart-shaped leaves numerous, to 3" long with or crenulated margins. The composite flower heads are clustered close to the stems and only have flowers. Each flower head is small, 1/4" long and much narrower, the flowers straw colored, the surrounding the flower head are tinged red.
