A perennial plant lives and blooms for many years.

venation -- The arrangemnet of veins in a leaf.

achene -- a type of simple dry fruit produced by many species of flowering plants. For example, a rose hip holds a few achenes.

A herb is a plant whose stems die back to the ground in the winter.

serrate -- toothed with asymmetrical teeth pointing forward; like the cutting edge of a saw.

Usually green, sepals typically function as protection for the flower in bud, and often as support for the petals when in bloom.

terminal -- Located at the end (the tip or the apex).

stolon -- A slender modified stem running along the ground, rooting at the tip, and sprouting new plants. Strawberries have stolons. Also called runners.

Like the teeth on a saw, leaves and other surfaces can have toothed edges.

fruit -- any seed-bearing structure in flowering plants. It is formed from the ovary after flowering.

The botanical term "berry" is different from common usage. Strawberries and raspberries are not berries. But a tomatoe is. A true berry is a fruit with the seeds immersed in the pulp.

basal leaves -- a leaf that grows lowest on the stem of a plant.

The receptacle is the thickened part of a stem (pedicel) from which the flower organs grow.

leaflets -- Each little leaf-like thing in a compound leaf is a leaflet.
