Fernleaf Biscuitroot is a member of the Parsley Family (Apiaceae), which includes mainly aromatic with hollow stems and fern-like leaves. Large starchy roots of biscuitroots are edible, and were traditionally used in a number of ways including as flour to make meal cakes which were taken on long journeys.
